BPP

Black women who are probably domestic workers standing outside with brooms of bambusa

I've been having fun going through the life archives. You have to really look to find older photos of black women, and I love that the internet places it at your fingertips. I've been thinking about making my own broom for awhile, inspired by the children's book, The Witch's Broomstick, but these kinds of brooms would be good really only for the outdoors. Sadly, we just moved into a home with no outside space save the roof that is accessible only through my bedroom window. Or, I thought was only accessible through my window. It turns out the kids who live down the hall can get up there trough window, which worries me for when they invite their drunkies on Friday nights. I know what drunk people my age are like- if there is a window, and it's open, why not hop through it. maybe I'll keep one of these brooms next to my bed, like a bundle of switches. So I'll just beat the first hipster that creeps into my bedroom to the ground, like my foremothers would. Make great aunt Lee proud.

I Am Thinking About Buying a Car

And wouldn't  these be nice? The pink one would   be awful actually
in the  Chicago winter, but the yellow one  would be perfect. Look at
that trunk space! And the yellow color would keep me happy through
the winter glums.

looking at new apartments

And it's painful. It looks like I'm not lucking out like I used to in getting homes near the train. So maybe I'll get something in a cheaper rent range and spend that extra dough on walking shoes. In the meantime, here's some homes I would like to like in. For $400 a month plz.

Malia's Legs!

These are the American First Daughters that I adore. I never really got it for Chelsea, or the Bush twins, but I love these little girls, and am so proud of them, basically for just existing. I guess Malia's not that little, she's as tall as her mom- unreal. Also- very jealous. My mom is 5'2". I guess it's just  blessing I surpassed her. I was hoping to get to 5'10", but I fell short of that goal by three inches. So, I guess I just want to reiterate the post title- Malia's legs!

^9

I loaded my first cone nine kiln the other day, and it came out beautifully! I am so upset that I am graduating, right as I finally got into the rhythm of working in the ceramics studio. Pish. Tosh. I'm going to be at OxBow for two weeks as a TA though- that's pretty exciting! I am going to hike and canoe and swim and work every single day for two weeks! Last year, I came home with 500 mosquito bites, a tan and minus 15 pounds. Heres some pictures from Oxbow last summer:

The Aforementioned Plants

I bought five plants on Tuesday, instead of going to class!
I need to name them and make a watering chart, so I remember which is which, or rather, who is who.

Cloudy Morning

Sitting drinking my coffee on the 12th floor, shoes off.
Molly came over early, seven am, I showed her how to use my grandma's sewing machine.
I forgot to open the shades to let the light shine on my new plants, but there's not much light anyways.
I don't really understand plants, but it's a wonder anything grows in Chicago.

Bust of an African Woman, 1851

Charles Henri Joseph Cordier

Moonlight Sonata in Milk

Brooklyn photographer Sara Naim has taken a series of photographs that reflect Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” as seen through ripples in milk. By placing milk on top of a subwoofer, she was able to capture some of the most powerful parts of the music. Take a look through all 12 of the photographs while listening to Moonlight Sonata and see if you can pinpoint the actual moment when each photo was taken.

Lightweight Porcelain Stool Design

I  love  seeing ceramics  in  contemporary  settings.
Fuck  looking for ceramic art and   finding 10 books
worth of "interestingly" glazed jugs. This is the stuff
that inspires me.

Why Do Finlands Schools Get the Best Results?

This Article from the BBC is an interesting window into the world of Finish education. I went to four different kinds of alternative schools in my life, five if you include going to an arts college, and I really wish I had had the chance to grow up in Finland. They have tested the highest worldwide in reading and science, and are second only to South Korean teenagers in mathematics. They don't start school until they're seven, and by the time they're, what, I think eleven, they are learning their third language. I'm still trying to learn my second, but seeing how together this country has got it, maybe I should consider learning Finnish. The kids are entrusted on going on cross country excursions on their own, they go to school and take off their schools when they get there, and there are at least two teachers in the classroom- one main teacher, and the other to help students who are struggling. I love this! The link leads to the article and to two videos, which are all fancy BBC videos, so I don't know if i can embed them.

That Velvet Voice

Jenna and I watched Sense and Sensibility a couple of nights ago, mostly
for Alan Rickman and his velvet voice. In case I didn;t want to watch S+S
(as if!), she also brought Harry Potter, for some alternative Rickman movie
watching fun. I prefer my Rickman with the blond hair though, and in period
costume (weird tight pants!)  Also, Ang Lee directed, and his landscapes are
always so beautiful.

I'm flattered

Hal,  Sofa's  Boything,  said I look  like this
Hercules  muse.   I  must say ,  I rather  like
being comparedto this hottie than to Tiana
from Princess and the Frog.  Muse lady has
some gusto!
